Consuming soy milk and tofu could cut down the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD
COPD, which develops as a result of smoking, can cause coughing that produces large amounts of mucus (a slimy substance), wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and other symptoms
The study was led by Curtin University of Technology's (CUT) Andy Lee and his colleagues from Curtin's Health Innovation Research Institute (CHIRI) and representatives from four Japanese hospitals.
Lee, a professor, said the research, conducted in Japan, found that people who consumed more than 75 grams of soy products daily had the most health benefits.
"We also found that people who consumed at least 50 grams of soy products per day reduced their risk of developing COPD and respiratory symptoms," he said.
Lee warned that although the research found that soy consumption could reduce the risk of COPD, it did not mean smokers should continue with the habit.
"Our research showed that long-term soy consumption was associated with improved lung function and a reduction in the risk of COPD, said a CUT release.
The soy food products looked at in the study included tofu, natto, bean sprouts and soy milk.

Hair, Skin Glowing Tips...Monsoon Care Tips |
Beauty tips: Beat the monsoon blues!
Come monsoons and you are sure to experience mixed feelings! On one hand there is mischief, playfulness, fun, romance, while on the other, there is misery, gloominess, filthiness and irritation.
In fact, getting caught in rain showers unprotected can convert even the most perfect makeover into a complete disaster. Constant care is therefore required to keep your hair lustrous and your skin glowing.
We asked Dr Mukesh Batra, Founder and CMD of Dr Batras' Positive Health Clinic, to give you a few homeopathic to help you to sail through those bleak-and-dreary-hair days:
1. Skin problems:
Have you noticed how during the rains, your skin tends to wrinkle up, shrink, and develop acne? Here are a few simple tips to get around all these problems.
What you need:
1. Taking 2 tablets of Silicea 6X, a homeopathic remedy, twice daily has been found to be useful in treating acne.
2. Chrysarobic acid 6C, 5 pills twice daily can help to treat generalised fungal infections.
3. Mercurius Sol 30C, 5 pills twice daily is recommended for fungal infection in the groins.
Fungal infections of the nails and in between the toes are common in the monsoons; so keeping them clean is important. Avoid heavy makeup. Preferably use water-resistant products.
2. Hair problem
Dandruff and hair fall are quite common this season. But a little care everyday could keep hair-raising troubles at bay!
To avoid a flat, damp or frizzy look, conditioning and neatly tying a pony tail is a favourable solution as the hair tangles easily in the wet season.
Get a therapeutic and rejuvenating hair massage done to help revitalise those damp roots.
Use a scarf to protect your hair from winds and adverse weather conditions.
Oiling and washing your hair at least thrice a week with lukewarm water is advisable. Use only mild shampoos or herbal-based shampoos rather than lathering shampoos as the latter tend to dry and roughen your hair and preferably dry your hair with thin towels.
Avoid getting wet as high humidity can damage your hair and lead to hair fall. If you get drenched in the rain, wash your hair immediately with a mild shampoo and follow it up by a conditioner to keep the scalp free of germs. If you tend to have dandruff and fungal infections, use an antidandruff shampoo.
Allow your hair to dry naturally. If you must use a hair dryer, hold it 6-8 inches away from the scalp. Do not use styling gels and brush your hair with a wide toothed comb.
What you need:
1. Homeopathic medicine Calcarea Sulph 6X can be taken for scaly and dry dandruff.
2. Kali Sulph 6X can help to treat sticky yellow dandruff. If the dandruff persists in spite of using an antidandruff shampoo and the indicated medicines, consult a doctor.

Michael Jackson's Autopsy Underway |
An autopsy on Michael Jackson is underway. While preliminary findings may be announced upon completion, any toxicology reports will take 6-8 weeks to process. TMZ is reporting that Dr. Lakshmanan Sathyavagiswaran, who was a star witness in the O.J. Simpson case, is performing the procedure. Stay Tuned for More Updates As They Come .... Story Developing
The autopsy should prove if there's any truth to the reports that prescription drugs may have played a part in Michael Jackson's death.
Though the autopsy will be completed on Friday, generally results from such a procedure take several days or even weeks depending upon the situation. Los Angeles County Coroner Investigator Jerry McKibben has said that should they be able to determine a cause of death from the autopsy, the results will be announced shortly after.
Jackson's friend Liza Minelli seemed to hint at the reports that Jackson's death may have been caused by prescription drugs, saying during a Friday morning interview on CBS' 'The Early Show': "When the autopsy comes, all hell's going to break loose, so thank God we're celebrating him now."Jackson died on Thursday at at UCLA Medical Center after suffering a cardiac arrest, according to his brother Jermaine. Paramedics rushed to the scene to try to resuscitate Jackson for nearly an hour.
"It is believed he suffered cardiac arrest in his home. However, the cause of his death is unknown until results of the autopsy are known," his brother Jermaine said.
Cardiac arrest is an abnormal heart rhythm that stops the heart from pumping blood to the body. It can occur after a heart attack or be caused by other heart problems.
There have been several reports claiming that prescription drugs may have played a role in the cardiac arrest and death of Jackson, though no doctors or officials have commented on those claims.

Mystery surrounds Michael Jackson's sudden death |
One day after Michael Jackson's sudden death, speculation was already turning to what killed the 50-year-old "King of Pop" just weeks before a long-awaited series of comeback concerts.
A family attorney said on Friday he had been concerned that Jackson's use of prescription drugs for dancing-related injuries would eventually prove fatal and that the entertainer's inner circle had ignored his warnings.
Authorities scheduled an autopsy for Friday. But they cautioned it could take weeks to determine a cause of death, which will likely have to wait for the return of toxicology tests. Those tests will determine if Jackson had any drugs, alcohol or prescription medications in his system.
Jackson, a former child star who became one of the best-selling pop artists of all time before descending into a strange and reclusive lifestyle amid accusations of child molestation, died Thursday afternoon at a Los Angeles hospital.
He had been rushed to the hospital in full cardiac arrest after collapsing at his nearby rental home.
Jackson's passing was front-page news around the world as airwaves filled with his greatest hits from "Thriller" to "Billie Jean" and social networking sites were bombarded with messages and tributes from fans and musicians.
"It's so sad and shocking," former Beatle Paul McCartney said. "I feel privileged to have hung out and worked with Michael. He was a massively talented boy man with a gentle soul. His music will be remembered forever."
Few details were known about the circumstances surrounding Jackson's death but he was reportedly unconscious and not breathing by the time he arrived at UCLA Medical Center. Doctors were unable to revive him.
His body was flown by helicopter from the hospital to the coroner's office late Thursday.
Lawyer Brian Oxman, a spokesman for the Jackson family, told CBS's "The Early Show" on Friday that he had been concerned about the prescription drugs that Jackson took due to injuries suffered while performing.
"I had warned everyone that I could warn and I told them that one day, Michael Jackson is going to wake up dead, which is a very odd way of putting it ...," Oxman said.
"I do not want to point fingers at anyone because I want to hear what the toxicology report says and the coroner says but the plain fact of the matter is that Michael Jackson had prescription drugs at his disposal at all times," he said.
Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery Homicide division searched Jackson's home in the upscale Holmby Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles at the behest of Chief William Bratton. But they called the investigation an "everyday" event.
Facing a battered reputation and a mountain of debt which The Wall Street Journal reported ran to $500 million, Jackson had spent the last two months rehearsing for the London concerts, including Wednesday at the huge Staples Center arena, home to the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team.
A complex process began in London to refund ticketholders, including people who bought tickets for sell-out shows from unauthorized dealers. A pair of "VIP" passes was offered on e-Bay recently for 16,000 pounds (over $25,000 dollars).
In death, Jackson's music enjoyed a commercial renaissance that had eluded him for years. His songs surged to the top 15 slots on online retailer Amazon.com Inc's best-selling albums within hours.
Jackson dominated the charts in the 1980s and was one of the most successful entertainers of all time, with a lifetime sales tally estimated at 750 million records, 13 Grammy Awards and several seminal music videos.
"Michael was and will remain one of the greatest entertainers that ever lived," said Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, Jackson's first label boss. "He was exceptional, artistic and original. He gave the world his heart and soul through his music."
Jackson's reputation as a singer and dancer was overshadowed in recent years by his increasingly abnormal appearance and bizarre lifestyle, which included his friendship with a chimp and a preference for the company of children.
He named his estate in the central California foothills Neverland Valley Ranch, in tribute to J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan stories, and built amusement park rides and a petting zoo.
Jackson was twice accused of molesting young boys and was charged in 2003 with child sexual abuse. He became even more reclusive following his 2005 acquittal and vowed he would never again live at Neverland.
Despite reports of Jackson's ill health, the promoters of the London shows, AEG Live, said in March that Jackson passed a 4-1/2 hour physical examination with independent doctors.
"I can't stop crying over the sad news," pop star Madonna said in a statement. "I have always admired Michael Jackson. The world has lost one of the greats but his music will live on forever."
Jackson was born on Aug. 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, the seventh of nine children and first performed with his brothers as a member of the Jackson 5.
His 1982 album "Thriller" yielded seven top-10 singles. The album sold 21 million copies in the United States and at least 27 million internationally.
The following year, he unveiled his signature "moonwalk" dance move, gliding across the stage and setting off an instant trend, while performing "Billie Jean" during an NBC special.
In 1994, Jackson married Elvis Presley's only child, Lisa Marie, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1996.
"I'm so very sad and confused with every emotion possible. ... This is such a massive loss on so many levels, words fail me," Presley said in statement on Thursday.
Jackson married Debbie Rowe the same year and had two children, before splitting in 1999, and he later had another child with an unidentified surrogate mother.
He is survived by three children named Prince Michael I, Paris Michael and Prince Michael II, known for a brief public appearance when his father displayed him to fans in Germany by holding him over the railing of a hotel balcony.

Double loss for swine flu family |
The family of the first person in Europe to die after being diagnosed with swine flu has suffered a double tragedy with the death of her baby.
Jacqueline Fleming, 38, from Glasgow, died on Sunday at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.
Her son Jack, who was born 11 weeks early, died a day later in a special care baby unit at the same hospital.
Ms Fleming had been suffering from underlying health problems since the birth of her son.
In a statement, her partner William McCann said it was an extremely distressing and difficult time for the family.
He said: "My beautiful son was born on the first of June 2009, 11 weeks early.
"He suffered from a number of complications and despite his brave fight he passed away earlier this evening at the Special Care Baby Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley."
The baby was not infected with the Influenza A (H1N1) virus.
Ms Fleming lived with her two other children - one aged 18 and one of primary school age - and her long-term partner in the family home in Thornliebank, just south of Glasgow.
William Docherty, who knew Ms Fleming, told BBC Scotland he believed she had been admitted to hospital following a stroke.
A female friend of the family said: "I think they are taking it really badly. She was in hospital for a couple of weeks and there were days she was getting better and days she was taking a turn for the worse.
"They hoped she was going to pull through and it was a shock when she died. The family are really devastated."
She added: "She was a really nice lady, really kind, a quiet woman, just a family person really."
Scotland Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "The death of baby Jack, especially coming so soon after the death of his mother, is a tragedy and I extend my deepest condolences to their family and friends for this unimaginably painful loss."
A further 71 new cases of swine flu have been confirmed by GPs in Scotland , bringing the total to 569. All of the new cases were in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS area.

In England, the Health Protection Agency said another 59 cases had been confirmed.
Earlier, Ms Sturgeon said that while Ms Fleming's death was tragic the public should take some reassurance from the fact that most cases of the virus were "relatively mild".
She said: "It is important to stress that in any flu outbreak, unfortunately, we will see a small number of deaths and that doesn't change the fact that for the vast majority of people contracting this virus the symptoms are relatively mild."

Rejuvenate your skin, the healthy way |
Everyone wants to look good. And more so, with beauty sessions like 'skin rejuvenation' just a doorstep away, every modern woman desires Skin Rejuvenation flawless skin.
However, many women often mistake skin rejuvenation to be just like any other beauty treatment, thus failing to understand the importance of medical expertise that comes side by side with the beauty regime.
It's quintessential to realise that skin rejuvenation is not all about getting an expensive facial, letting your tired nerves relax and going back home with a fresh feeling. There's a lot more.
A skin refreshing session may imply just a simple glow for some and removing scars and spots for others, but before anything is done on the skin, the root cause of one's skin problems need to be figured out first.
Skin treatments will only be needed in case of any deficiency and lack of nutritional value. Unless medically examined for factors like skin type, colour complexion, sensitivities, reasons behind ill-health and further requirements, a skin rejuvenation session can do more harm than good.
Dr. Anita Sharma, consultant dermatologist, Clinic Dermatech, explains: "As we age, our skin loses out its original lucidity and elasticity as tissues start getting degenerated. In order to stimulate these elastic tissues, there has to be a treatment, but in accordance to our skin type as it may cause damage."
So for all the pretty women out there, wanting to look gorgeous, it's time you know what exactly your skin wants and accordingly decide an apt way to keep it healthy.
Besides basic skin related factors, your doctor also needs to work on secondary factors like the hours of sleep and stress undertaken before suggesting any skin treatment. This ultimately adds a medical angle to the conventional meaning of skin rejuvenation.
Agrees Dr. Atul Hasija, dermatologist, Clinic Dermatech, "Through skin rejuvenation treatments, we can treat problems like tanning, oiliness, acne and scars. But in the absence of a proper understanding with the doctor of the patient's skin type and what products would suit best; the chances of side-effects may rise."
Unlike customary touch-and-heal-therapies, the new technologies used for skin rejuvenation not only promise a glowing skin, but also ensure a healthy skin texture, removal of the dead skin. Besides, it's a good way to relax a fatigued mind and body.
Under this treatment, all flawed and dead skin is removed, along with pigments. "Appropriate creams and ointments are applied on skin that works with defined techniques to ensure quick results in lesser time," informs Dr. Hasija.

Green tea reduce stroke risk |
Two cups of green tea a day may reduce a person's risk of having the most common form of stroke, say researchers. According to researcher Professor Colin Binns, of the School of Public Health at Curtin University in Western Australia, the study shows that people who drink at least one cup of green tea a day reduce their risk of ischemic stroke, reports ABC Online.
"We can say if you are going to drink a beverage, then tea is the healthier option," said Binns. "We believe other kinds of tea are half as effective as green tea in reducing risk," he added. The findings have been published in the journal Stroke..

Smoking often? Say goodbye to your sex life! |
Those who smoke 10 cigarettes a day, better watch out! As using a 'cancer stick' as often as 10 times a day can put a dampener on your performance in bed, a new US study said.
At a press conference organised by the Aakash Institute of Fertility and Research (AIFR) to announce the conduct of the third International conference on Sexology on February 16 and 17, an expert said regular smokers would suffer from sexual abnormalities like erectile dysfunction.
The study conducted in US two years ago revealed that if a person smokes about 10 gaspers a day over the years he has endangered his sexual life. He would suffer from erectile dysfunction as the nicotine content in the coffin nail would affect the spongy tissues in the organ leading to its shrinking.
This would affect the sexual life of a person, Dr Adaikan, an expert from Singapore said.
He said even consumption of alcohol might affect sexual life leading to erectile dysfunction.
Quoting statistics, Dr T Kamaraj of AIFR said of the 120 crore Indian population, 20 crore men were suffering from impotency and sexual inadequacy and other sexual dysfunctions.
Observing that the root cause for many of the relationship problem and abnormal behaviour was sexual dissatisfaction, Dr Kamaraj said sex-related problems were more prevalent among the IT and BPO sector employees due to intrusion of western culture, changing lifestyles, hurried and stressful work situations.
The advent of globalisation, computerisation and the growing internet culture have dramatically changed the daily life activities of the people leading to more stress and strain, which affects the sexual life of the person, he added.
The prevailing work culture has changed the person's attitude towards sex leading to value degradation and even sexual frustration.
The fast food culture and consumption of junk food leads to obesity, which, in turn, affects the sex life of the person, he noted.
He said in this era of competition and stressful life people in all walks of life suffering from neuroses, conflicts, frustration which affects family relations, marital harmony leading to increase in divorce rates.
He said about 15 per cent of married couples end up with infertility of which 35 per cent was due to female factor and 30 per cent due to male factor. About 20 per cent of infertility was due to combined factor and the balance of 15 per cent was due to unconsummated marriages.
To address these issues and to debunk the myth and misconceptions in society about this important subject, the Indian Institute of Sexual Medicine and AIFR would organise a two-day conference in which 500 to 600 delegates from India and countries like the US, Singapore, Australia and Malaysia would participate on various issues, including sex education in India.

British woman becomes first-time mother at 66 |
A 66-year-old businesswoman was on Thursday reported to have become Britain's oldest mother after giving birth to her first child, a healthy baby boy.Media reports said Elizabeth Adeney, who travelled to Ukraine to have fertility treatment, delivered the baby by Cesarian section at Addenbrooke's hospital in Cambridge on Tuesday.
Adeney, who is going to be 67 in July, was due to give birth next month, but brought the procedure forward, the Daily Mirror said. She had earlier made clear that she had wanted to keep her pregnancy and birth secret.
A hospital spokesman on Thursday said: "She has told us that she wants no publicity."
Adeney, a wealthy businesswoman and divorcee, was earlier reported to have received IVF treatment using a donor egg at a clinic in Ukraine.
In Britain, Adeney would take the title of "oldest mother" from Patricia Rashbrook, who had a son, at the age of 62 in 2006, following treatment from Italian fertility doctor Severino Antinori.
However, Antinori told a British newspaper earlier this month that he was "shocked" at the prospect of Adeney having a child.
"I respect the choice medically but I think anything over 63 is risky because you cannot guarantee the child will have a loving mother or family," he said.
But Adeney is on record as saying that she is "fitter" than most of the younger women working for her in her plastics and textiles company.
"I don't have to defend what I've done. It's between me, my baby and no-one else," she said.
In 2006, Carmela Bousada of Spain was believed to have become the oldest mother of twins at 66. The oldest mother in the world is believed to be an Indian woman, Omkari Panwar, who gave birth at the age of 70 in 2008.

HOME REMEDIES For Whitening Teeth |
HOME REMEDIES
Finally, there are the various and rather dubious home remedies for whitening teeth:
Brushing with lemon juice.
Don't. Lemon juice can lighten the color of your teeth, but only at the expense of your teeth. The juice is acidic. It causes calcium loss. This whitens teeth because calcium gives teeth some of their off-white color. It also means affected teeth are less resistant to decay and cavities. Your teeth might be brighter, but you could have fewer of them.
Brushing with mashed-up strawberries.
Another ill-advised idea. The notion here is that the strawberries' fibrous pulp and seeds act as scrubbers, scraping away nasty plaque and germs. But the fruit's sugars and acids do more harm than good, requiring that you immediately and thoroughly brush with a fluoride toothpaste.
Brushing with baking soda.
This doesn't really whiten teeth — there's no bleaching action — but baking soda can help remove plaque and make teeth shiny because it's abrasive. Use too much baking soda too often, however, and you may damage the enamel of your teeth.
Brushing with wood ash.
Wood ash (presumably retrieved from your fireplace) does whiten teeth because it contains potassium hydroxide, otherwise known as lye. But the ash has to come from a hardwood, such as oak, maple or walnut. Ash from softwoods like pine don't contain enough potassium hydroxide to be effective.
Again, be careful. Wood ash may contain other chemicals and compounds you wouldn't want to put in your mouth. Also there's no way to know how much potassium hydroxide you're actually getting in a dab of wood ash; too much too often can significantly damage your teeth.
